The Skilled Worker Visa replaced the Tier 2 (General) visa in December 2020 and is the primary route for skilled workers from outside the UK (and EEA nationals arriving after Brexit) to work in the United Kingdom.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for a Skilled Worker Visa, you must:
Have a job offer from a UK employer who holds a valid Skilled Worker sponsor licence
Be offered a role that meets the skill level requirement (RQF Level 3 or above — broadly equivalent to A-Level)
Meet the salary threshold for your role
Have a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your employer
Meet the English language requirement
Have enough money to support yourself in the UK
Salary Thresholds (from April 2024)
The minimum salary requirements increased significantly in April 2024:
General threshold: £38,700 per year
New entrant rate: £30,960 (for those under 26, recent graduates, or switching from some student routes)
Going rate: Each occupation has a specific "going rate" — you must be paid whichever is higher between the general threshold and the going rate
Some shortage occupations and health/care roles have different thresholds. Contact us for the specific requirements for your role.
The Certificate of Sponsorship
Your employer must issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) before you can apply. The CoS contains a reference number and confirms the details of your job offer.
There are two types:
Defined CoS: For those currently outside the UK (assigned from a specific allocation)
Undefined CoS: For those already in the UK applying to switch or extend
How to Apply
Get a CoS from your employer — your employer applies to the Home Office for a sponsor licence and then issues you a CoS
Check your eligibility — ensure you meet all requirements including salary and English language
Gather documents — passport, CoS reference number, proof of English, financial evidence
Apply online — through the UK Visas and Immigration online service
Provide biometrics — attend a visa application centre or use the UK Immigration: ID Check app
Wait for a decision — typically 3–8 weeks, or faster with priority services
English Language Requirement
Most applicants must demonstrate English language ability at B1 CEFR level or above, either by:
Passing an approved English language test
Being a national of a majority English-speaking country
Having a degree taught in English (from a recognised institution)
